Zach Wiegert on 2022 CFHOF Ballot

Didn't he only have one holding call against him his entire career at NU?

This is actually Wiegert's 7th time on the ballot.

Zach won the Outland Trophy in '94, as well as first-team All-American and UPI lineman of the year. An integral piece of the "Unfinished Business" season that brought Osborne his first national title.

I don't know why he shouldn't be in the College Football HOF.

I suppose the fact that this thread has been on the football forum for a week with very little commentary says it all -- offensive linemen don't get nearly the respect and attention they should.

Agree and that’s why I think this year is improved. I’m really confident in this young offensive line.

Look at this list … how would you narrow it down? There are 21 guys on this list who’ve won a major award like Weigert. Also don’t discount politics because guys like Troy Vincent or Ron Rivera will garner votes.

Who on that list has been on the ballot 7 years or longer? That's how I'd start to narrow it down. Also, I'd separate the offensive linemen from the rest -- and vote for 3-5. I won't compare Wiegert to Reggie Bush -- because it's too easy to allow the highlight makers influence your votes, while offensive linemen almost never appear in a highlight.

Generally, 15-20 get inducted most years. There's obviously a larger pool of CFB players/coaches than the NFL for the Pro Football HOF.

I'm not sure how many total ballots are cast each year, but through my job I get a ballot. So if I get one, there have to be easily hundreds of ballots. It's really tough to decide on which 12 FBS level candidates to choose from, and nothing against Wiegert, but offensive lineman don't jump off the ballot like some of the other names do. My ballot:
Zach Wiegert
LaVar Arrington
Reggie Bush
Robert Gallery
Julius Peppers
Rashaan Salaam
Roy Williams
Champ Bailey
Eric Berry
Paul Posluzny
Dwight Freeney
Tony Gonzalez

The FBS Coaches section was really weak, but I voted for Gary Pinkel and Larry Blakeney.

Those are some serious player names. Hard to believe many of those players on your ballot aren’t already in the hall of fame.

For me, those 12 were pretty rock solid. I think the only questionable one for me was Dwight Freeney, but if he played for a more established program than Syracuse, he would have gotten more accolades.

Exactly as I expressed.

The issue is offensive linemen don't make the highlight reel. And unless you are a fan of the team with the offensive lineman on the ballot you probably don't even recognize the name. The best chance an offensive lineman has with name recognition is if he becomes NFL All-Pro (which should have no bearing on the college Hall of Fame).

Was Rashaan Salaam a better running back than Zach Wiegert was an offensive tackle? I doubt it. Salaam was a nobody until his Heisman year. But it's likely at least ten times as many fans know who Salaam is compared to Wiegert.
