I see this as a way to help address a public health issue.
I was a soldier for 25 years, Ranger, paratrooper. Nobody is more “in” on “liberty“ than me and I got the scars and a piece of metal in me to prove it. But I notice in Benjamin Franklin’s quote that he has the word “essential” right before liberty. This country gives us the freedom to decide what that word “essential“ means.
And therein lies the problem with America trying to fight this virus.
To be truly and totally successful, some measures that relinquish some personal freedoms are called for. Some might be even considered draconian. And while I am almost certain that they would be effective measures, those measures will simply never fly in America.
It is because of who we are. Our “national DNA” so to speak. Our fierce pride in the ability to exercise and maintain personal freedoms. Our independent nature, distrust of and non-dependence on big government. And our just general cantankerous nature towards authority in general. Our very strengths, the things which make us a unique and strong people....work against us in fighting the virus.
Contrast that with the more socialist countries of Europe with a FAR higher dependence on “government“ in general....or an authoritarian country like China and we simplify will never compare favorably in fighting something like this virus.....a virus which requires a relinquishing of “some” of those personal freedoms.
To me, wearing a mask in public, social distancing, getting any new vaccine, avoiding large gatherings, using a phone app, wiping things done and washing my hands...following guidelines and information from doctors and scientists do NOT violate MY definition of “essential freedoms”.
But in THIS country who’s to say MY view should be paramount?

I highlight your statement, because as Ben cautions us, you and many others would be willing to purchase "temporary safety" by giving up what appear to be some simple, safe to lose personal freedoms.
Two short comments:
1. The founding fathers knew that giving up freedoms, however small, to any power, government or other power, were freedoms you never got back. Thats why they designed the Constitution and Bill of Rights the they did.
2. As a Dr., I can tell you that masks, social distancing, and the lockdown do nothing to "stop" the virus. All these were ONLY meant to slow, only slow the spread so that our health system was not overwhelmed back in March/April.
Other than keeping people who are ill (NOT people who test positive with the Covid screening test) away from healthy people can you avoid the illness.
Otherwise, its a virus, if you are out in public you are going to catch it or not based on your own immune system, nothing else matters.
No safe vaccine for years, if ever.

Actually it just heightens the fear as testing positive is not the same as having the illness Covid 19.
The app only tells you if you a near someone who has tested positive, not someone who is ill with Covid 19.
Brings up some privacy issues too, come to think of it.
Where is the HIV app, child sex abuser app, drunk driver app?
The testing is fraught with false positives and is much too sensitive, picking up people with a viral load that is far too small to be infectious.

Well Doc, you illustrate my point entirely. You have “interpretations” and so do I.
Who is right and who is wrong? Is not slowing the spread of a virus “fighting” it? And in slowing the spread allowing the hospital systems to give better care to the ones who are really ill? I’m not talking about lockdowns or business closures or preventing kids from going to school. I’m saying we have to drive on with life but we can do so by just using some common sense precautions that will help. And if wearing a mask is violating personal freedoms in your view Lordy, don’t ever join the infantry! Last I checked, doctors wore masks all the time but it’s been a while since I’ve been in a hospital thank the good Lord.

Oh and I absolutely, positively disagree with you about a vaccine. A vaccine will be available within three months. Now we can argue about how effective that vaccine will be. Or how safe it will be. But it will be released because there’s way too much money involved and at this point, it’s a matter of national pride. I personally think this is President Trump’s surprise that he wants to put out right before the election but whatever....no later than January.....take it to the bank.

If the vaccine is released before the election the members of a certain party and most certainly the main stream media will stress how quickly it was developed and talk about its safety and generally denigrate it.
But the second a new president from that same party takes office in January.....virtually overnight that vaccine will become completely safe and absolutely necessary....hailed by the press.

This is consistent with early epidemiologists who gauged that by the time the NW had its blow up that probably 1-2 million had already been infected in the US. These experts were silenced for what ever reason. This should be seen as good news.

I would definitely believe we’ve missed tens of thousands of COVID deaths.
Not sure of your point. 10's of thousands? How does that compare with 700,000,000 unreported/undiagnosed cases? We've probably had 10's of thousands of COVID deaths reported where the infection was not the primary cause of death too. The take home is this IMO; The infection is running through the population much faster than reported and the morbidity rates are a fraction of what we've been told. This is good news.
If you didn’t count the infection, you missed the death. So how would you be able to calculate the IFR? You can’t just add all the uncounted cases and ignore all the uncounted deaths. If anything, the estimated IFR should help inform you how many deaths were missed. You certainly don’t ignore all the missed deaths to calculate an artificially low IFR.
