Sucks to lose such a talent, but if he wasn’t doing the right things he wasn’t going to play much of a role anyway. Free it up for someone who will do the right things and be able to contribute. A 5 star on the bench is as valuable as a walk on if neither plays a significant amount of time.

And if a coach let's things slide for that kid, the coach loses credibility with the rest of the team.

Football's history is littered with kids who had amazing ability but squandered it. If he couldn't get it together off the field, then the coaches had no other choice here. Free up the scholarship and the coaching time for the kids who want to be there.

Yep wasn't there a Texas Tech kid who tore it up as a freshman but had to leave school because his grades were less than a 1.0? My memory is that it was during the Spike Dykes era.

Good post. The things you can’t measure in the recruiting process are sometimes what make or break how good a kid will be.

Frost has done a great job. Told Bell to take a hike when the player gave him an ultimatum. With Dixon, he was firmly planted in the 2 deep as they weren’t going to let him start until he acted right. Sounds like there was a tipping point.

You do realize we've had plenty of guys over the years who looked like they were headed down the same path, but luckily made the turn in time, right? People tend to forget Farley went from nitwit, to total stud, back to nitwit over his career. I know it's said you can't fix stupid, but you can miss the fact that stupid was really talented.
