Lincoln - In a back-and-forth battle between 2018 NCAA Tournament teams, two-time defending Missouri Valley Conference champion Drake made the plays down the stretch to steal an 83-77 win over the Nebraska women's basketball team on Wednesday night at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

In a game that featured huge runs by both teams in the first half, the game settled into a classic possession-for-possession battle in the final 15 minutes. The Huskers (0-1) used a 14-0 run to start the game to build a 16-point first-quarter, before Drake responded with a 16-0 second-quarter run on its way to building a 13-point edge two minutes into the second half.

The Huskers completely wiped out Drake's double-digit lead with five minutes left in the game, as freshman Sam Haiby scored four straight points to give Nebraska a 67-65 lead. But that margin was short-lived and the experienced Bulldogs, who feature 11 combined seniors and juniors on their roster, made enough plays down the stretch to open their season with a road win.

• The Nebraska women’s basketball team opens the 2018-19 regular season with a major challenge against 2018 NCAA Tournament qualifier and defending Missouri Valley Conference champion Drake on Wednesday night at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

• Nebraska made its first appearance at Pinnacle Bank Arena with a 94-41 exhibition win over Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday. Six Huskers scored in double figures led by 13 points from freshman Leigha Brown, while fellow freshman Ashtyn Veerbeek added 10 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Taylor Kissinger and Nicea Eliely each added 12 points, while All-Big Ten honorees Hannah Whitish and Kate Cain both pitched in 11 points against the Lopers.

Scouting The Drake Bulldogs
• Coach Jennie Baranczyk brings arguably her best and most experienced Drake team to Lincoln to open the season on Wednesday night. The Bulldogs return 10 letterwinners, including all five starters, from a squad that went 26-8 overall and 18-0 in the Missouri Valley Conference last season. Drake earned their second straight Valley title last season and made their second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament.

• Drake’s top six players include three seniors and three juniors who make the Bulldogs an explosive offensive team that averaged 82.4 points per game in 2017-18. Overall, Drake features two fifth-year seniors, two fourth-year seniors, two fourth-year juniors and three traditional juniors.

Awesome performance by the Husker Ladies. Lead Drake 29-15 at the end of one. (Lead 14-0 before Drake even scored). Ladies can hardly miss. Newcomers are exceptional!

AND Drake comes Storming back on a 16-0 run. Husker Ladies shooting has suddenly gone cold. Ladies are in a real :Catfight:. Drake leads 45-36 at the half!

43% shooting percentage and 47% from 3 vs 34% & 39% for the Husker ladies (which isn't Bad for treys) are the difference.

AND Husker Ladies come storming back to within 3; 60-57 at the end of three. Drake has taken away our Lobs to Cain under the basket & Husker Ladies have had too many empty possessions. One Qtr to go. A real :Catfight::Catfight::Catfight:!

And Drake wins, 83-77. :( Lady Husker late Treys to tie it up & take the lead misfire at the end.

Hats off to the Drake Bulldogs, who had a successful scheme to stop lobs to Kate Cain under the basket, and collapsing 3 players into the paint stopping runs to the rim; the Huskers just had too many empty possessions. It will be a good learning experience for the Huskers.

That doesn't bode well for the Ladies. Unless Drake is pretty good, this could be a real long season for the gals.... Damn.

Drake is Very Good! (Tournament Team) (We beat them last year in 2OTs, but one of their best players, Rhine, was injured & couldn't play last year). This will be a good learning experience for the team and newcomers. The newcomers are exceptional, all could be starters. Kudos to Coach Amy and her staff for their recruiting acumen. While the newcomers are surprising, Let's not forget the ones that 'Brung us to the Dance' in the first place!

You could see the superior experience and team play of Drake and their confidence to come from behind; but Despite our lapses we did manage to tie it up just before the end. Husker Ladies still have Heart! We'll come out a better 'Team' for the Loss!

Okay.... Thanks. I don't follow women's bball that much, pretty much just the Lady Huskers, so I didn't have a clue about Drake. Maybe this was an early season kick in the rear that sparks our ladies to a really good season. GBR!!!
