Kentucky Sports Writer Not Feeling the Love for NU

Yes, as the man said, when there were only 3 TV channels to choose from, Nebraska & Oklahoma were getting way more air time than other schools from the Midwest. NU had an advantage they no longer have.

Only corn and sadness? That's some serious trolling right there.

Mr. Jones tries to make the point that Nebraska can’t recruit because they are not the only game on TV in the Midwest like it was in the 70’s and 80’s. The last few years of recruiting show that to be a ridiculous notion.

A good marketing department, good position coaching, coaches who know how to build relationships, tradition and a solid fan base can go a long way to compensate for no longer owning the Midwestern airwaves.

I do have to say that “Corn and Sadness” would be a great name for a Country Western song.

He's partly correct about NU being on tv more than others. He's an idiot for his other comments. How the ---- do some of these fools get jobs?

Nebraska hasn't been great because it hasn't had great coaches since Osborne retired. Solich got lax, Callahan couldn't coach, Pelini couldn't recruit, or, didn't want to put in the effort, hired to many subpar coaches/friends, and Riley, so far, has been, well, Riley.

Nebraska may very well never be able to sustain what it once had again. I don't know. Never is a strong word. Who knows what will happen 50-100 years from now. The population could explode someday for whatever reason in the plain states. In the now, it looks to be quite tough to have a sustainable, powerful program on an annual basis.

So the last time Kentucky was relevant to college football was.... give me a minute I am thinking... OH yeah thats right NEVER. I do not remember the last time they were ranked in the top 25.
according to this article we are #7 all time. Kentucky is... Do they still play football?

This one which ranks the top 50. DONU again #7. Kentucky not in the top 50.

As for the Corn and sadness. According to CNBC NE is the #11 state in the country to get a job. Kentucky? #35

or you could look at this one where we are #20 and Kentucky? #44. I particularly liked this quote.
  • Nebraska has an unemployment rate of 3.6% — the second-lowest in the nation (tied with Utah).

So how about level of education. https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/rankings/education
NE #6 KY? #35

So it seems to me that Kentucky is nothing but corn squeezins and sadness.

30 years ago there was less competition. Fewer D1 programs and fewer programs that invested into their programs like NU had. Nebraska in the '70s and '80s was almost dynastic in terms of their high end consistent success.

In the mid-'70s there were only 20 or so programs that were truly high end.
Now there are a half dozen truly elite programs - Alabama, Ohio State ... and then there are 40 programs that realistically have one-off shots to be special.

Where would NU rank on the following list of programs of recent (5 years) success? Iowa, Wisconsin, aTm, LSU, Miami FL, Arkansas, West Virginia, TCU, Washington, Stanford, Utah, K-State, Florida, North Carolina, Ok-State, NDSU, Michigan, Mississippi, Houston, Louisville, Georgia, Clemson and Boise State. Certainly success can be measured in many different ways but the sheer competition level has increased. More programs chasing limited resources (recruits) have diminished the ability to maintain long term success.

He seems to make the correlation that they were great because they were the only game on TV; when in truth they were the only game on TV because they were great.

Good point. But his point is that you no longer have to be great to get regular air time. Every Illinois game can be seen on TV wherever the BTN is sold.

If we win the B1G, the good players will come. If we get the right leadership and some championship momentum on our side, we could enter another long period of sustained success.

If Boise can do it, so can we. But it takes a guy like Chris Pederson. It will be interesting to see if PJ Fleck can get Minnesota to Wisconsin's level. If it can be done, I'd say Fleck gives them their best chance to do it.

Seems like a little overkill in a debate with a substitute radio announcer...

If his point was valid, then Kentucky basketball would suffer the same fate as there are more basketball games on tv also
