Smile Nebraska at Purdue Game Thread

First road game of the season and a test for our young defense and young QB in a road environment.....

Will be the Huskers first game on natural grass this season......

Purdue comes into this game at 1-4 and will be starting a true Freshman QB Danny Etling against the Huskers....his first ever start at the college level..... he threw two INTs against Northern Illinois in approximately a half he played two weeks ago....

But that wasn’t the only switch. The Boilers will look different from the team that started the season 1-4 and 0-1 in the Big Ten.

Redshirt freshman offensive lineman Jordan Roos moved to starting right guard. Senior defensive tackle Bruce Gaston moved to defensive end, and freshman Ra’Zahn Howard will move up the depth chart in the middle.

Freshmen Evan Panfil and Jake Replogle will help out on the outside with senior defensive end Greg Latta hindered by a hamstring injury.

Freshman receiver Dan Monteroso is back from a broken collarbone and will likely take a prominent role in the passing game, as will DeAngelo Yancey, a freshman who had a career day with Etling at the helm in the second half against Northern Illinois.

For those keeping track, that makes seven first-year players who shift into key roles for the Boilermakers after the bye week. “Being able to play some of those younger guys gives those guys an opportunity to push some of those older guys,” Hazell said. “I think that drives the older guys to do better.”

Purdue is averaging 17 points per game.......they are 117th in total offense with 301.6 yards per game and are the only 1A school to average under 100 rushing yards a game at 87......

Purdue has given up 11 sacks in 5 games....

Game will be on BTN and BTN2Go at 11 AM CDT.....

Pregame/Game/Post Game can be heard here starting a 6AM CDT: http://www.huskers.com/LiveEvents.db...&DB_OEM_ID=100

    FYI......

Not even Nebraska’s coaching staff knows for sure what it’s getting from Purdue’s offense and Etling.

They only have the second half of the NIU to put together a scouting report.

The Boilermakers are comfortable with Etling. If they weren’t, coach Darrell Hazell wouldn’t have made the switch from Rob Henry. Now is a chance to see the first chapter of what started so to unfold so many years ago.

Boilermakers' youth movement set to begin

    FYI......

Lined up in a shotgun, freshman quarterback Danny Etling awaited the snap. To his right was freshman tailback Dalyn Dawkins. Flanked on each side were freshmen receivers Cameron Posey, Deangelo Yancey and Dan Monteroso.

The youth movement is well underway in West Lafayette.

“You forgot the freshmen linemen, too,” joked head coach Darrell Hazell, asked about the freshmen on Wednesday.

Coming out of the bye week, the Boilermakers have a new look. There’s a different quarterback, an altered playbook and a rejuvenated group. There was an energy in practice these past two weeks that had been lacking since the preseason. It’s renewed hope around the program. Alas, we see what Purdue’s football future holds.
It all starts with Etling. The highly-touted recruit always dreamed of playing for Purdue. He’ll get his first start on Saturday.

    Wow.....

In total, this Purdue team has 52 freshmen on the roster—23 who were redshirted last season, readying for their chance to take the field.

Have we been practicing on grass? Seriously, that's a bit of adjustment. I'm anxious to see if the defense gets into a killer rhythm since they'll be able to verbally communicate for the first time this year without a deafening crowd, unless 25,000 die hards follow them there. Love away games, just wish I could afford to go to more of them.

    FYI....

Purdue has allowed just 24 points in the first quarter this season, including zero through the first three games.

    FYI.....

The Huskers' road records since Pelini took over in 2008 are 16-8 overall and 14-6 in conference play.

Ten of Nebraska's top 22 players on defense will be playing their first game away from Memorial Stadium. Pelini said he's glad kickoff is at noon EDT kickoff so his charges don't have to sit around all day stewing.

    Wow....

Purdue has rushed for 200 yards or more in conference play just seven times in their last 33 games dating back to 2009. The Boilermakers have yet to rush for more than 153 yards in any game this season.

    Cool.....

Purdue’s Big Bass Drum — 8-feet in diameter, 4-feet wide and billed as the world’s largest — was built in 1921. The drum that you’ll see Saturday is the same instrument. It has never needed to be replaced.

But there is still this matter of Purdue’s surprisingly narrow loss to Notre Dame earlier this year. It’s the big anomaly in the Boilermakers’ portfolio. How did they put the Irish in a position where they needed three fourth quarter touchdowns to score a seven-point win as a 21-point favorite? Well, Purdue stopped the run. Notre Dame averaged just 2.5 yards per carry on the ground, but facing Nebraska is a much different task. Notre Dame currently ranks 91st nationally in rushing offense. Nebraska ranks ninth.

Tickets are available on StubHub for the low, low price of $1.75 (that’s not throwback pricing or anything), the drive to West Lafayette isn’t terrible from Lincoln or Omaha, and there even appear to be a few hotel rooms still available.

    Boil the Boilermakers
God grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do…
and the eyesight to tell the difference.

Makes you wonder why anyone would really want to play for them? Yea the home state close to momma's apron strings I suppose holds some there but still.......... I'll bet Gregory is sooooooooooooooooooooo happy the way things eventually worked out for him. I bet he's all fired up for this one! Like to see him make a couple sacks on that Freshman QB..... Have to say I'm the most excited to see TA take another start this time on the road. I have a feeling our offense is going to have a BIG day once they get rolling...... GBR
