    Time for another reminder

I've mentioned this a couple of times and it's quickly dismissed/forgotten, but I figured I'd bring it up again. Let's not forget our fellow Americans fighting and dying on the other side of the world.

It was once President Barack Obama's "war of necessity." Now, it's America's forgotten war.

The Afghan conflict generates barely a whisper on the U.S. presidential campaign trail. It's not a hot topic at the office water cooler or in the halls of Congress - even though more than 80,000 American troops are still fighting here and dying at a rate of one a day.

If you are going to fight a war then the entire country must be made to pay the price, either through higher taxes or shared sacrifice. When you try to fight a war where only part of a population has to sacrifice then those who sacrifice will be forgotten by those who do not.

I think of them more than I should just as I think of the brothers i left behind.

I do not need a politician to remind me of that.

Someone like you should never be asked to remember, but the politicians should be required ever day too.

Empires have been trying to tame that backwater for centuries, it seems immune to modernization and even the well-intentioned efforts of the U.S. in driving out the Taliban. Sadly I suspect a decade from now it'll look much as it did a decade ago, and all we'll have to show for it is lives lost and billions spent.

Exactly right. What is going to happen is going to happen whether we leave today or 10 years from now.
