In order to clarify the confusion created by applying that mathematical equation, it has now been replaced with a simple "18".

Fair point on the location, I would think that would make it a crime no matter who was involved.

Wasn't the Craig incident in an airport restroom? I would assume that may be the basis for the difference.

All I know is that Kerry Gauthier is lucky that this didn't occur on the other side of the imaginary line between Minnesota and North Dakota, otherwise Cardinal would be calling him a rapist. Because while there is no distinction between the types of rape, a politically drawn line can make all the difference.

What is it about Minnesota anyway? And what exactly is a Golden Gopher?

I am not sure what your reference to North Dakota is, but I presume it must have an age of consent of 18. Assuming that to be the case, if KG performed the act in North Dakota that he is alleged to have performed in Minnesota, then yes he would be a rapist. That is pretty self-evident, isn't it?
And I urge you to look for any post in which I said there are no differences between types of rape. There are, that is why there are multiple types and levels of rapes on the books. But the lack of consent of the victim is not one of those differences. Victims can be forced physically or psychologically. That is the rationale behind statutory rape statutes.

Man, while I agree that meeting a 17 year old in a public rest area is not the safest, or smartest thing to do when you are a public official, I also have to play Devil's advocate here and say this. If he wasnt breaking a law, what the hell does it matter?

I think the same could be said for lots of acts and comments that people make. While technically there is nothing illegal about what people sometimes say or do, deep down we all know that it's kind of messed up.
I'd say the same thing if this were ANY male or female in 50s having sex with ANY teenager - gay, straight, whatever. It's just messed up.

If you are engaging in conduct that could result, if you end up being just a couple of years off on the age, in being asked to have a seat by Chris Hansen, I'd say yes, there is something fundamentally wrong with you.

What would the outrage be if this was a High School Jr or Sr having sex with his 56 year old gym teacher?

But I can lie about my age, right? By like, 30 years?
