Olympic soccer question
I'm not a fan of soccer, but watched the US women play Japan today for the gold medal and actually enjoyed the game. Our women are incredible athletes and are to be congratulated.
My question is that, with the US up 2-1 as time ran out, I thought I was watching the NU-UT 1 second game again. Time expires, and the ref added two more minutes to the clock and told them to resume. And then they actually played about 2:13 before the ref called time. Can anyone shed light on what was going on?

Stoppage time (i.e. a sub coming on ususally is given 30 seconds) is added on to the end of each half....in this case a minimum of 2 minutes with time being added to that in stoppage time if the ref sees fit....so nothing like Texas and NU what-so-ever.....
Standard in all games....

Yeah, pretty standard. I think they should stop the clock at times, to remove the random time added, but that is soccer.......

I've never understood why they don't stop the clock either. If a player is down injured and play is stopped, just stop the clock. Stop the clock when a team calls for a substitution and start it again when the sub enters the playing field and the ball is placed back into play. Instead, the ref says "eh, let's about . . . . 3 minutes." And even then determines when to stop play AFTER the 3 minutes have run. Strange way of doing things, but that's the way it's done.

Meh... stopping the clock just leads to arguments about when exactly the clock should have been stopped, how much time should be on it, should we put a second back on, etc. I actually don't like that in football. Seems like reviews take longer because the refs are too busy under the hood trying to figure out what the game clock should be.
If you think education is expensive, try ignorance.

Thanks for the clarification, guys. I never really understood the game much.
