12 cents! THE HORROR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Without seeing John Schnatter's comments completely in context, I have to imagine that it was just a way of putting the increased costs in context.
Based on the number of pizzas they sell, "Our best estimate is that the Obamacare will cost 11 to 14 cents per pizza, or 15 to 20 cents per order from a corporate basis," Schnatter said. http://www.politico.com/politico44/2...es-131331.html
It's unlikely that the price of a pizza would increase by such an amount. A pie selling for $10.99 now isn't going to be marketed at $11.13. They will look at a variety of ways to recoup that cost. My guess is that the cost of the pizza won't increase, but the amount of toppings will decrease. Maybe employees won't get raises. Maybe new employees won't get hired. Maybe the price of a pizza will increase a dollar rather than a fraction of a dollar, making pizza night for families less affordable.
The fact of the matter is that 14 cents isn't a lot of money until you add it up over the millions of pizzas that Papa Johns sells in a year. Schnatter simplified things to make it not sound like much money - he should have gone the other direction and given the total cost to his company, which is likely in the millions of dollars. That probably would have had a greater impact.

I grew up a couple blocks from the original Valentino's Pizza on 35th & Holdrege, across from what was then the Ag Campus. IIRC Val sold his first pizzas for 50 cents in the late 50's. Is the cost of health care what's driving the price up to current levels?

Sure. He can tell them they have a new employee benefit. Health insurance. What a novel concept.
If he'd spoken up for his low wage workers and said I'm now happy to provide them with health insurance, I'd be buying Papa John's right and left. Now, I'll avoid it. Frozen's gotten so good that pizza like Papa John's are a bit irrelevant anymore.

People that work for Papa Johns at an hourly rate are most likely part time and on their parents health insurance.

There's an outlet for a chain conveniently just around the corner here called Papa Murphy's. They sell pre-made, fresh but uncooked pizzas to order. You take them home and bake yourself. Much better than any of the typical chain pizzas OR the frozen ones.

But its much more dramatic to assume they're all poor folks with no health insurance whatsoever, isn't it?

I think a lot of people would be shocked if they go into the local Papa John's or McDonald's and see exactly what demographic is working there these days. Its not just high school kids anymore.

My thoughts exactly. I'd say 90% of the people who deliver my food as of late (last 2-3 years) have been over 30.

Probably because those are the only "saved or created" jobs available under this administration.
