FWIW Chastain was right about the defense and Solo....Solo looks awfully sill right now...

can they beat Japan....or will they be favored to?
-
Is Sinclair the best in the world? Is Wambach her biggest rival for that title?
Refereeing was terrible. Had the makings of a WWE fix is in result. Seemed like Vince McMahon was behind this one. LOL
Good luck USA and hopefully Canada can rebound emotionally for bronze
-
Wambach is the best...
Yeah it was not great for either side.....
Good luck on the Bronze....

Except for the World Cup loss the USWNT has 'owned' Japan over the years....and yes we will be favored....honestly I think Japan was playing on a high for their whole country after the devistating earthquake last year....the USWNT is the best team in the world....
So can they beat Japan?....yes...we are and have been the #1 team in the world for quite sometime....
Last game with Japan on Jume 18 the USA won 4-1.....

And frankly that shoulder by Canadian to the Americans' head at the end should have been a straight red and a a sending off...so they got lucky on that call....
Especially since she was tackling hard all game and probably should have already had a second yellow...
Just got done watching on DVR...had to take a break after regulation to take the son to soccer practice, hard for both he and i to avoid any news of the outcome...but, we managed it and came home to watch the rest.
redmachine - chastain is horrible. worst evidence tonight was comparing this single soccer game to Roger Bannister's 4 minute mile. Let's face it, last years' US Women's game with Brazil was more important and compelling than tonight... it is light years below the historic first four minute mile.

Sorry Red, Sinclair is by far the best player in the world, Canada got jobbed huge!! and that ref shouldn't be able to participate in any further games in the olympics. Sour grapes?? for sure. Just what I watched though. And NBC sucks HUUUGE at olympic coverage.
I've got a fever, and the prescription is more cowbell

I beg to differ...she is not....and you would hard pressed to find few in the world who would agree with you....Great player....yes....greatest....not a chance in the world....you won't find Sinclair on many if any Top 10 players in the world....Wambach on the other hand you will on just about all....go google it....
Canada's women's team has always had a reputation of being chippy and close to dirty and the ring leader is Melissa Tancredi.....dirty player who should have been sent on double yellow and then cheap-shoted an American with a shoulder to the face....she doesn't belong on the field in the Bronze Medal match....

Chastain was right about the defense and Solo and it was proven today....knows her stuff inside and out....too much of a wonk though and and needs to take a breath every few minutes....and she can be agrevating at times....
Oh and I disagree with you on last years game with Brazil being more compeling....Brazil is way overrated and I have said that several times this week....I told they would le to Japan and heck they lost to GB who is a good but not great team....Brazil has a few stars and trades in on the mens reputation....but they plays as individuals not as a team....they got blasted in the World Cup for wearing jerseys with the stars for winning five World Cups....which the men won....not them....and they deserved what they got.......Japan beat trhem easily as I said they would because they play as a team....and Canada would beat them too....
But yeah the Bannister comparsion was lame....I agree...

Yesterday's game may have been more interesting/entertaining/compelling for a variety of reasons. But, my argument is that the Brazil game was on the bigger and more important stage and we had an arguably more compelling comeback victory in that game. Chastain's comments elevated yesterday's game to the most important in women's soccer history...my point is that it was not.

In the woman's game the Olympics and World Cup are considered equal and always have been since its addition in the mid-90's....not so in the men's game....where its pretty much a U-23 competition these days....mainly because of the overload of fixtures at both club and international level.....
So in that sense I still disagree....
Chastain is a commentator/color person....nothing more and nothing less....she is not the only one to ever get caught up in hyperbole...I just don't get all the hate for her in some circles...for the most part she knows the game very well.....sometimes she needs to stop and take a breath...its unfortunate that a player like Solo is able to define her like she has and get away with it....especially a player who has a history like Solo does....who has burned allot of bridges with her unfortunate and ill-timed comments about the classy Braina Scurry...who she will never match her in class or as a goal keeper....not to mention Solo nearly got herself banned from this Olympics for taking a substance that is not approved by the IIOC or FIFA....without consulting with the national teams doctors....
Chastain because of her posititon is not able to say what she thinks...so Solo gets a free pass to run her mouth like she does....I'm not a fan and have not been since her comments about Scurry....
As my daughter who is an avid soccer fan and player said yesterday 'I'd take Chastain any day over Solo....she was a 91er (my daughter respects that great group of players) and a great player and teammate....Solo is out for herself and a bad teammate'.....pretty much says it all for me too.....

My final thought on this game.....the Canadian woman need to ask themselves how they were leading not once, not twice but three times and lost the game....it was not one call or the ref that lost this game as the teeth knashing is about north of the border....they lacked the composure to hold a lead....championships are won or built on that being able to close out a foe....not collapsing when a call fair or not goes against you and gets in your head....if you want to reach the level of the USWNT you have out work them, have mental toughness and overcome bad calls etc....heck just look where US Hockey has come since 1980....because we pulled our socks up, work hard, got better and are arguably as good as Canada now....and in some minds perhaps a bit better....having three teams in MLS.....is only going to help grow the sport in Canada....now its time for the Federation to step up and invest in and develop the game...how many more De ro's and Sinclair's are out there? And it will be good for the USA to have a tough foe from up North and vica versa....because like it or not the two countries are joined at the hip in every sport except football...and I for one love that....where else do you see that in the world?
Heck of a game yesterday....hope Canada builds on it and grows...and learns from a hard loss....the sport needs them and the USA needs them to get better and better...
Sometimes out of adversity comes some good...IF you don't drop the ball.....
I will be rooting for Canada against France...who out played Japan....yet lost...so both teams are coming off tough losses....I think it will show allot about the character of the team up North how they respond on Thursday....
Canada 'Hey, Ho...Lets Go'....

Funny you say that about Canada, when their coach said this about the USWNT:
Herdman said before the game that the run of futility against the Americans was on the minds of his players, and he addressed it with them in the run-up to the match. He also injected some pregame intrigue by accusing the Americans of using "highly illegal," overly physical tactics on free kicks and corner kicks.
For the record, I agree with you, Tancredi should have been watching the second half and the extra time. She is as dirty as they come, and knows it.
You never stand so tall as when you kneel to help a child.

Wow, all I can think is how all of us would be reacting if the shoe was on the other foot. I can never remember the "6 sec rule" being called on a goalie, and the penalty was iffy, I have seen it go both ways. But, I know we would all be freaking out right now if Canada had won 4-3 in the same situation.
That being said, that was a fantastic match, but it always seems in soccer that the officials have more of an impact than in any other sport...just think, Nebraska vs. Texas AnM, but in way to many games this happens. Something needs to be done to clean it up, as that crew made a ton of bad calls. One Canadian player committed EIGHT FOULS, and after #7, seemed to be grinning about it PLUS a shoulder to the face. So sadly for every Canadian fan that feels like the ref blew those 2 calls, we could also say...would they have held on with 10 players.
It's sad we are talking about the officiating in what was a dramatic and greatly contested game.

Did you see Tancredi's quote about the ref, saying she wore an American jersey...um, hey did you forget about YOUR EIGHT FOULS PLUS A MMA TYPE SHOULDER
-
Yeah I know I read that....Herdman is going to face fines and suspension for some of his postgame comments as will Tancredi who ran her mouth allot too.....
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sport...rticle4466298/
And yeah Tancredi....funny how folks from Canada and some Americans have totally ignored that she stomped Carly Lloyd in the first half and got away with it and coudl easily ahve been sent off late in the game too....and yeah she revels in being thought of as dirty....

Agree....but by the letter of the law those were both correct calls....no argument there at all....regardless if its been calle or not before....
Honestly I don't think our players or coach would have run their mouths like that....even the normally classey Sinclair unleased some unkind words....
Yup had the red card been given for stomping Lloyd and later the MMA hit it would have been a totally different game....funny how they overlooked that...
Great game indeed....
