possible bowl destinations
Doing some holiday travel planning and started to consider whether to follow the Huskers to a warm weather destination. I'm thinking we could use this thread to link in various publication predictions.
Big Ten Bowl Lineup:
National Title Game (Miami)
Rose Bowl (Pasadena)
BCS At-large (Phoenix, New Orleans, Miami)
Capital One (Orlando)
Outback (Tampa)
Gator (Jacksonville)
Buffalo Wild Wings (former Valley of the Sun, (formerly Insight)) (Phoenix)
Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas (Houston)
Ticket City (Dallas)
Little Caesar's (Detroit)
Gator and "Valley of the Sun" are both listed as #4/#5; so, I am not sure which picks first this year.

Outback vs. Arkansas
This would fit nicely with where I'd like to be for the holidays...

I highly doubt we'll make the National Championship and the Rose Bowl seems like a bit of a long shot. I think that we aim for a BCS Bowl, perhaps a Fiesta berth against the Big 12 Champs.
Truthfully, I would be thrilled with either a Big Ten crown or a BCS at-Large berth. Either shows that Nebraska is relevant again and surely a Top 10 team in the nation.

It would be nice if it was the Gator Bowl. My daughters high school band is playing there this year
Mayans: Sorry about 2012! Better luck next time!

That's right. We're in the BIG now. It's Rose Bowl or bust baby!

Statistically, Nebraska has (at worst) a 10% chance to get to a BCS Bowl. With Ohio State and Penn State on probation, they'll be ineligible to represent the Big Ten in the Rose Bowl. From that fact alone, we're one of 10 teams in the conference who could win and get the auto-bid to Pasadena.
Going up from there, it's probably safe to assume that Minnesota, Northwestern, Indiana and Purdue are not going to win the conference. Obviously an upset can occur, but the chances seem remote. This drops Nebraska's odds to 1 in 6.
It's impossible to predict the At-Large berths for the BCS Bowls, but making another assumption - that the Big Ten gets TWO BCS teams like last year - Nebraska's chances double from 1:6 to 2:6, or 33%.
I'm not banking on conference picking up an At-Large bid to the Orange, Fiesta or Sugar, but it is possible. And like Michigan proved last year, it's better to be the "best team that DIDN'T make your CCG," than to actually lose the Championship Game. Michigan State fell several slots after losing to Wisconsin.
So at this point, it's virtually a lock that Wisconsin wins the Leaders. Nebraska thus has two great options - win the division outright for a shot at the CCG and possible Rose Bowl, or we can finish 2nd in the Legends Division (behind UM or MSU) and win an At-Large bid.
| Legends |
Leaders |
| One Michigan |
Wisconsin |
| Nebraska |
Ohio State* |
| The Other Michigan |
Penn State* |
In Scenario A, U(M)SU beats Wisconsin. The Badgers fall prey to the same fate as the Spartans did last year. Nebraska is the #2 team in the conference and likely gets a bid. In Scenario B, U(M)SU loses to Wisconsin. Same end result for the Huskers. Bucky goes to Pasadena and the Paul Bunyan schools fall beneath NU in the overall "perception" of the Bowl Pickers.
Because of the scandal and fall out in the Leaders division, Nebraska has an amazing shot at a BCS Bowl this year. Simply finish in the Top 2 of our division and we're virtually a lock.
Again, that assumes that the B1G gets two BCS bids, but with 10 total slots open (including the Nat. Title), it would seem pretty likely that we could lock up two of them.

OU would always be a great game to play, but I'd love to see Neb play Alabama or Notre Dame or So Cal again sometime in the next 5 yrs. That would mean ND would have to get alot better....

No it doesn't. Because of ND's great following, Bowls always pick them higher than they should be. Thus, they are frequently overmatched in bowl games.

"I love it here," Pelini said. "I've said this before: This is not a steppingstone job. This is a destination. I enjoy what I'm doing here, I love who I'm working with, I love who I'm working for. I'm not looking for another job. I'm committed to winning a championship here. I'm passionate about winning a championship here."

Think there's any chance we could get Michigan, Wisconsin and Michigan State on probation? That would make it a coin flip.

I actually laughed out loud on that one.
Pretty sure we could induce heart attacks in Dantonio and Hoke, though.

The Little Ceasar Bowl in Detroit?
A questionable pizza in a failed city in the middle of winter.
I can't wait.

Outback -- the team could visit Tyler Moore.
