Tough, tough group...France (FIFA #6) and North Korea (FIFA #8) are both very very good teams...
Hampden Park is a tough place to play to boot...Scotland's national stadium....
So no walk in the park in the group stages...
Hope Solo has to keep her nose clean too after a failed drug test that she was lucky to not get suspended for....
Notre Dame only had one Rudy but Nebraska gets a new crop of Rudys every season
-
Tough start against France, falling behind 2-0 before roaring back with four goals.
-
As gold medal favorites, I wasn't sure what the USA was doing in the early phases of the game.

USA vs. Best Korea coming up shortly.
I'm sure the Korean Central News Agency has already declared victory over the imperialist aggressors by 3 touchdowns....

I just saw Pohang, and the surrounding jungle........I did train with the ROK Marines though. That was a great time.

The ROK military is somethng else...I got selected to do a joint exercise with them and was a ground controller in a hardened bunker and their officers would slap the crap out of young enlisted troops if they failed to complete a task as directed....first time I ever saw that and my Colonel ( I was a young Captain at the time) told me to let it go....it was their culture and their rules...

You're not kidding. I had a young ROK Lieutenant come over to our intel shop in Vietnam to pick up some 50 series charts. I spent about 40 minutes pulling the charts and chatting with him about whatever. The next day he came back and looked like a short Sonny Liston who had just gotten into the ring with Ali; he was beaten up terribly - black eye, cuts and bruises a bandage over an ear, etc. He apologized profusely for wasting my time the day before as he had asked for the wrong charts and his Colonel was upset and hoped his apology was acceptable. If not I was to contact his Colonel. I had no desire to contact his Colonel. Also would I get the correct charts for him. I told him no problem. Those troops were ROK Tiger troops and all business.

Oh, the Infantry Officers did not play around. One ROK Marine got the butt of an M-16 upside his head for talking while one of our officers were talking. I felt bad for him, because the USMC Officer was not even addressing the men, just an ROK Officer, but the enlisted ROK Marine was apparently talking too loud.....
The training we did with them was amazing. Hills, rappelling, shooting, urban warfare, jungle warfare, and the Korean style wrestling that we did at the end of the day.
The after hours drinks were something else as well. Korean Soju is formaldehyde based, and it takes days to get that stuff out of your system. The hangover is unbelievably bad, and you cannot drink enough to feel better. I actually had our corpsman give me an IV bag of fluids, and I was still dehydrated. That was in the late 80's and I will never forget that drinking experience.....

OMG, I had forgotten about soju. Never again I told myself as I woke up in the morning between the hootch and the frag wall and wondered how the hell I got there.
-
....anyway the reason I came over here was to congratulate the lady gymnasts for their gold medal
-
That they were....no messing around at all and I witnessed it several times....

Soju my first deployment to Korea in 1989 was rampent....when I want on my remote in 97-98 it was off limits to US Forces....but guys got it anyway....they bottled it old wine cooler bottles...and you never knew what strength you were getting according to the guys I knew who drank it...anywhere from 3 to 150 proof....
By that time I had stopped drinking however, I took one shot of Japanese Soju and that stuff was lethal....oh baby....
I took some Japanese Soju (nasty stuff too) back to my Colonel after a deployment to the Nagaski area in 1991....I came back one Friday evening from the flightline and I heard him and the CMSgt's singing from his office and noticed the Soju had been removed from the trophy case...they were three sheets to the wind....
He called me the next day at home (Saturday) and was giving me a hard time....in a good natured way...for not telling him how leathel it was and he could out drink a truck load of Marines.... He was in real bas shape and his wife between laughing at him gave him a load of 'stuff' for that...
