Former Husker in Lincoln attacked in home, possible hate crime
A woman escaped her home near 22nd and E streets early Sunday after being bound with zip ties and attacked by strangers wearing masks, who then tried to start her house on fire, police and people close to the victim say.The woman's partner and members of Lincoln's gay community describe the incident as a hate crime, saying the woman was targeted largely because of her sexual orientation.

Either way it is horrible. I just hope people don't jump to conclusions on this until the police have a chance to investigate.
Born a Nebraskan, raised a Nebraskan, will die a Nebraskan!! Go Big Red!
Men of Israel, consider carefully what you intend to do to these men. Some time ago Theudas appeared, claiming to be somebody, and about four hundred men rallied to him. He was killed, all his followers were dispersed, and it all came to nothing. After him, Judas the Galilean appeared in the days of the census and led a band of people in revolt. He too was killed, and all his followers were scattered. Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.” - Gamalie the Pharisee - Addressing the Sanhedrin regarding the new group called Christians

I hope she's ok. It sounds terrible.
I wouldn't have thought poured gasoline could only flash though. Wonder what that's about? Sounds like she is lucky to be alive.

My guess is the vapor was too strong and did not last long enough start something else on fire.

This is pretty janked up. There was a picture with the article with a slur spray painted on a wall. Not sure where it went though.

Woman in Lincoln attacked in home, possible hate crime
Absolutely terrible. Prayers for peace and healing for this woman and for our community.

Saw a picture posted on Facebook. Looks like there were a LOT of people there for that.

What are the chances she did it to herself?
Seems a lot more plausible than the scene that was described.

You think she carved homophobic slurs into her own body? That, to me, sounds implausible. Perhaps we all should let the investigation play out before jumping to conclusions.

Not taking sides but didn't this happen a few years back? Somebody carved something into their arm and said they got attacked.

I've no idea. I didn't mean it was impossible, just seems improbable. Truthfully, regardless of whether it was done to her by others or done to her by herself, it's horrible. As I said, we all should let the investigation play out before jumping to conclusions.

An Obama supporter. At an ATM or something like that. Claimed some dudes did it to her or something. It was political. She made up the whole thing.

IMHO, it does raise an eyebrow when Lincoln is now in the process of repealing and sending to vote a new law to include GLBT as a protected class. I honestly do not remember a crime like this in many, many years in Lincoln and for this to come up has to raise suspicion.

Fair enough. I can see how the timing could be seen as suspicious. Although I also think it's fair to say that in general (not necessarily in Lincoln) there likely have been many more attacks motivated by anti-gay feelings than there have been self-inflicted wounds staged to look like such an attack.

We'll see what the police discover. I admit after reading the article, admittedly knowing absolutely nothing about the case other than what is presented, that there is a part of me that wonders if this was staged.
Staged, or not staged, it is a horrible event.
We'll see how it plays out.

I'll be the first to admit that my own personal bias may have prevented me from entertaining the thought that this was staged. I've had a friend and a co-worker each of whom were the victim of such an attack. So I guess I was taking the victim here at her word.

Interesting points by both CornfieldCounty and SeattleHusker: the upcoming city vote on the Fairness Ordinance both could make it more plausible that someone might stage such an attack AND could make it more plausible that such an attack might actually occur.
As Tyler Richard said in the Journal Star article, I have every bit of faith in the police department to fairly and comprehensively investigate the incident, and no matter what, the woman and her loved ones remain in my prayers.
