The NCAA isn't issuing any report like they issue when a school goes through the infractions committee, they're using the Freeh report in place of their own report. The only reason Penn State "can't" appeal is that there's nobody to appeal to in this case other than the judicial system. The infractions committee isn't issuing these sanctions so they can't appeal to the infractions appeals committee.
This was something discussed on PSU fan boards. They initially thought they could appeal but someone posted that would not be the case. They did not exude your knowledge or logic however. Their fans are still pretty much in denial.

Have any good links to those PSU fan boards? And not because I have any intention of signing up and piling on, lurking purposes only, just curious how the general fanship is dealing with this.

I don't think it's that a big deal some of their message board fans are in denial. I'll bet many here would be too.
I do think it's a big deal that in-denial Board of Trustee members were elected.

I agree. Penn State will be sued for 10s of millions of $$$$ without any help whatsoever from the NCAA. Why does the NCAA think it can take 10s of millions of $$$$ from Penn State when the victims will get this in the courts anyway? Is the NCAA going to give that money back when Penn State gets hit with multi-million dollar judgments? I don't think so. The consequences are in the civil justice system, NOT in NCAA sanctions. Get real, NCAA.

Civil liability of the school toward the victims is a separate issue from the sanctions by the NCAA. The NCAA is claiming the right to regulate this under lack of institutional control. I wouldn't be surprised if the NCAA doesn't say the fines received will be used for some worthy purpose.

Yeah, I read they will not appeal regardless of the sanction. This would be irresponsible. The university is going to be slammed with civil judgments, and this is old-fashioned piling on. If the NCAA thinks it can impose a $60 million penalty (which is the rumor), Penn State had better act responsibly and appeal, or it may wind up paying that $60 million penalty twice. Such a penalty would be beyond the scope of the NCAA's powers. Just because Penn State is a member of the NCAA does not mean the NCAA can impose unanticipated penalties upon Penn State because it doesn't like what Sandusky did and what Joe Pa did not do. There are expectations by the schools concerning what powers they believe the NCAA possesses. If there is an unexpected, unreasonable penalty, Penn State has to appeal it. The NCAA has no business creating a new fund for abused children by imposing any fine at all on Penn State; that's not what the NCAA is for.

One person is talking about being punnished over "allegations". Allegations? Another says his kid will be leaving penn state...because of the BOARD OF TRUSTEES! (the BOT and the president are apparently the ones to blame now).
How embarrassing it must be for the 1 or 2% of PSU fans that don't have their heads up their backsides.

God...I wish they'd get the death penalty just so we don't have to hear about Penn Flippin State for a few years. When they come rolling in to Lincoln this fall that is ALL that will be talked about.
And please...enough of "punishing innocent players". While not a perfect situation most of them will be able to transfer...that's the way it is...some innocent people will be inconvenienced by the punishment. But it's really Penn State as a whole that is going to be punished by gutting thier football program and Penn State as a whole ENTIRELY deserves that. And more.

I think that's their strongest argument. I'm not sure they'll try and make it though.

Some are in shock and some are in denial and some are just embarrassed. Their god is dead.

Travel Squad

Among other penalties, reports are now coming that PSU will face a $30-60 million fine.
http://www.cbssports.com/collegefoot...tball/19632027
Added to the future settlements with the victims, PSU will be paying a heavy fine. BUT, doing a quick look at their endowment figures they could cover this penalty without much pain. Heck, the PSU fan base in 2011 donated $136 million to the endowment, giving it a total of $1.83 billion.

Referring back to my earlier post:
I've been struggling with mixed feelings about the magnitude of the penalties on innocent students/players from other sports. But, then I waded through through the comments under the CBS News article and this statement summed it up for me.
Children were sacrificed to save Penn States Football's Legacy. It's only right that Penn States Football be sacrificed to save society's legacy............

campus police knew in 1998, a janitor witnessed an encounter in 2000, the local high school coach knew in 2008... so this innocent little Happy Valley/Mayberry routine is getting old.
State College needs to move past Denial.

It doesn’t matter if the glass is half full or half empty. What matters is you have a glass that has something in it. Some people have no glass, or have a glass with nothing in it. So appreciate all that is in your life and quit questioning whether your glass in half full or half empty.
