Waste of dollars. Treatment only works when one wants it to work. I take that back, rarely it works while the process is ongoing, but those instances are so few and far between all you are doing in lining the pockets of the treatment industry. Most that are "sentenced" to treatment use it as a vacation. Just my opinion, not that I know anything about drugs or alcohol.
When someone wants help it is freely given.
That may be true. I'd submit though that it is less a waste of dollars than a lengthy prison stint, since the recidivism rate for imprisoned drug users is pretty high.

It would be interesting to see what the imposed drug treatment result rates are.

Yes, treatment for addiction. Obviously I am not talking about marijuana here but hardcore drugs like meth, heroin or crack.
As for locking someone up for third or fourth offenses, I suppose I could get on board with that. But I think that the approach of doing everything possible to get the person off of drugs without jail time would substantially reduce the percentage of people who are committing third and fourth offenses.
and like I said because you may use on the weekend does not make you a addict requiring treatment.
We dont send hardly anyone to treatment when arrested for alcohol why now with these other drugs and yes I know and have know casual users of the drugs you mentioned. Prescription meds are causing more harm in this country than all the other drugs combined...maybe we need to start putting the dealer known as the Dr in Jail

I was speaking strictly towards the required treatment portion of the statement. Not the ecenomics of locking them up. I dont beleive that users should go to jail. Unless there are other violations involved with the arrest. And i am not talking about the piddley stuff that police will often tack on to help insure that the offenders will plead out or do time for the original offense (possesion).

So we're in agreement on that part of it, but just part ways on whether drug treatment should be part of the punishment. I guess my overall point is that when it comes to punishing non-violent, non-dealing drug offenders, the focus should be more on rehabilitation and assistance than punishment and retribution.

Rehab works as my brother Squat has said. It only works when a person is ready. We can go through Prochaska's stages of change model.
A person in pre-comptemplation will not adhere to the treatment regiment. They will not commit to it. this country is ages behind other parts of teh world when it comes to treatment of drugs and Alcohol. You arrest me and send me to treatment. YOu send me to pops who is a LCDC to do a assessment. I determine now that I dont need treatment? You're going to send me to treatment anyways because now its court ordered.
Same as the one that may be a raging crack head. If I/he/she is not ready for treatment...hell I'll use the 10 day detox to cleanse my body so I can get a better high. But I'm gone as soon as you send me to inpatient rehab. mandatory treatment will nor has it ever worked.
