A polygraph is as good as the person administering the test. I doubt Zimmerman had the time to research any worthwhile methods to "beat" it.

If he had longer than a few days, he had plenty of time.

By the way, I don't think he did.

If you don't think it is wrong to lie you don't have to prepare for it. Not saying that is the case but they are easy to beat. It is hard to beat for someone who has been taught from day one that when you lie it is wrong.

Men of Israel, consider carefully what you intend to do to these men. Some time ago Theudas appeared, claiming to be somebody, and about four hundred men rallied to him. He was killed, all his followers were dispersed, and it all came to nothing. After him, Judas the Galilean appeared in the days of the census and led a band of people in revolt. He too was killed, and all his followers were scattered. Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.” - Gamalie the Pharisee - Addressing the Sanhedrin regarding the new group called Christians

I've been administered a lie detector test by the FBI for a security clearance as well. While I agree that they don't result in flashing lights that say lie, the administration of the tests, results, and subsequent interpretation are darn reliable in my opinion.

The fire service gives out lie detector tests like water. most of the time they catch you in the lie with the questions asked and how they ask them.

I doubt Gary Ridgeway was schooled much on the polygraph in 1984 when he passed it and went on to kill many more people. The funny thing is that in the same case, an innocent man failed the test. There is a reason that these test results are not allowed in court.

Moreso than any coaching, I expect someone who zealously believes in a particular crusade--say, a wannabe cop who thinks he's probably the last thing standing in the way of of his neighborhood falling to crime--would probably remember his side of the story pretty stridently.

Voice Stress Analyzer =/= Lie Detector.

Edit to clarify: By that, I mean "Voice Stress Analyzer =/= Polygraph."

According to a recent study funded by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), two of the most popular VSA programs in use by police departments across the country are no better than flipping a coin when it comes to detecting deception regarding recent drug use. The study's findings also noted, however, that the mere presence of a VSA program during an interrogation may deter a respondent from giving a false answer.

Go in with a hoarse voice. Everything is stressed at that point.
