Profiles in Sewage: John Edwards gets a mistrial

Just watched his preening victory speech. What a great guy.

He's got to be the most morally bankrupt human being to run for the presidency since Nixon.

    Not guilty on count 3.

"I want to make sure that everyone hears from me, and from my voice, that while I do not believe I did anything illegal or ever thought I was doing anything illegal, I did an awful, awful lot that was wrong," Edwards said. "And there is no one else responsible for my sins."

Knowing a Republican political operative (female, 30ish and married) from Iowa and hearing her first hand account of actions by a person no longer in the race this year, I'd have to say Edwards isn't unique.

I am not defending Edwards. I just have a hard time ranking the morally bankrupt.

I'm guessing Marcus Bachmann made a pass at her? He's a naughty one, that Marcus.

Not a fan, but he never should have been charged.

And do I think he's morally bankrupt? That's a harder one... he cheated on his wife. Lots of men do, and in some circumstances, I can see why. When they are apparently supportive AND fighting a life threatening (and eventually ending) disease? That's hard to justify.

OK cm, I'm curious. If you find a personal decision on whether Edwards is morally bankrupt to be "hard", what would it take for you to find that decision easy? I ask, because I find this one VERY easy, based on what you pointed out - brazenly cheating on a wife over a fairly long period of time, who was all the while fighting cancer AND still supporting him.

In my mind, Morally bankrupt is generally reserved for the Charles Taylor, milosevic, serial/mass killer type who acts with little or no remorse.

I have a difficult time believing he is worse than Gingrich.

I think you're right. I should have just mentioned "typical lawyer" and not been so specific.

I thought moral bankruptcy was when someone knew what they were doing was wrong and also knew they were responsible for creating the problem, I didn't know that the bar for what one was doing wrong had to be genocides...

Edwards? Yeah he made his money on tobacco and mass tort litigation on the plaintiffs' side.
