It’s one thing to lose, and it’s another thing to lose without dignity. Jurgen Klinsmann showed after the loss to Brazil Wednesday night that he doesn’t understand what’s expected of American athletes.
Say what you want about Bob Bradley, but that man was all class. He represented his country with dignity in a way Americans could be proud, just as his father had done while fighting in Korea weeks after his 18th birthday.
We are not a nation of floppers and cheap-shot artists. We expect the men who wear our national team uniforms to
show the dignity and class for which the U.S. has been known. Yes, the U.S. was embarrassed last night 4-1 against Brazil. Afterward, Klinsmann, the former German star, claimed our team was too naive and not nasty enough.
“We’ve got to move on, but we need to get an edge, more nastier,” Klinsmann told media at FedEx Field. “Maybe we’re a little bit still too naive, maybe we don’t want to hurt people, but that’s what you got to do. You’ve got to do that at the end of the day, so we’ve got to step on their toes more and get them more frustrated and make a case with the referee maybe as well for us, not only the opponents.”
Klinsmann told the SoccerbyIves.com. “If you watch big teams in the world when there’s a call going against them, Barcelona is one of them, they come with 10 guys towards the referee, the referee is confused, he doesn’t even know who to show a yellow card to.
“And I think we just need to be stronger to make our case, to tell clearly that this is not all right and to be more confident in certain moments.”
