    McKeon on Recruiting

To read McKeon you would think Bo and his staff just need to listen to him on how to recruit. Sorry Sam I think Bo and his staff know the targets they want and are already in the process. They have already shown they are after the area studs you list. Yes it would behoove us to narrow the gap between Ohio and Michigan. However, you need to take into consideration the talent they both have in their back yard. How many Nebraska kids do you see listed in the top recruits? Thats why they get started out of the gate much faster than we do they dont have to do as much traveling or work as hard getting their local kids who are just waiting for an offer from dear old "u". We get a lot of our recruits after the season starts and they can make a visit and experience game day. I think one thing you fail to mention is the inroads we have made in recruiting in the "Big Ten area".

So...you're saying Sam didn't hit this one out of the park?

I do agree with McKewon's assessment that Bo and Co. better keep up with the MU, OSU, PSU, and MSU's in recruiting because he's not going to outcoach them on the field. This last article was the second time in which he's briefly commented that Pelini and staff have no coaching advantage over these other schools.

I take it more that with the staff continuing to have turnover that we can not expect to out coach these guys. Its tough when we have new coaches coming in every year....to try and get some consistancy going. I just hope that these guys stay out of trouble and stay committed to the team for several years to come.

On the recruiting side of things I do believe the Bo and team are making the moves necessary to get the top athletes. As has been said on here before, you cannot land these guys if you can't get them here. The Cravens thing was probably not going to happen, but does stink that he couldn't get out here for a visit. I would suspect that Bo will keep after him until the ink dries on the paper.

I am not overly concerned about the comparisons in the rankings right now between rival Big Ten teams. I am looking at 247 and the rankings are listed according to the total number of points so the number of recruits plays largely into that total --- the more recruits you have committed the higher the ranking.

Michigan is rated #1 largely because they have 18 commits. Nebraska is 23 with 8 commits. The point I am trying to make is that if the rankings were based on the average points per commit it would reflect an entirely different picture. The Husker average is 88 and Michigan's is 91.72. Those scores are based on the perception of experts in the area of recruiting, however those are just that --- perceptions of human judgements in a mostly subjective sense. A 40 time of 4.71 is perceived by most of us as "better" than a 4.69 and in a truly objective sense it is. The reality of the issue is what real difference does that .02 seconds make in the actual talent the kid brings to the table?

What is am saying is I am not sure that the average of 88.0 and 91.72 are all that different. Don't get me wrong. I would much rather see NU in the top 10 of the ratings than at 23. And I also pretty much agree with most everything Sam writes in this article. At the same time, I am not going to get to excited about Missouri ranked at #11, 12 places ahead of Nebraska when their average recruiting ranking is 84.
The only thing worse than having nothing to say is saying it.

Then my 5.89 time should trump those nicely!

I think it is a challenge to get lots of the very top recruits, even with the assets Nebraska has. But the kids we have now and the recruits we win are plenty good enough to get us into a top 10 finish (as are our coaches). I think when that happens, we will also be able to show momentum and be regularly competitive for the very top recruits. I really believe Pelini is on the cusp.
