Rushmore would be a great income generator for whatever tribe it was awarded to.

Exactly! Can you imagine how good the casino would be at the base of the monument.

And lots of night clubs for the party after the night's gambling fun is over, oh and don't forget about the escort businesses on top of that.

I can see it all now! The three land surveyor's and that other guy looking down with smiles on their stone faces because of the success of it all!

A 12-day visit and this guy is now an expert. How about we start with the real problems of alcoholism and unemployment and how it effects everything else. I don't care how much money that is paid or land that is given back, alcoholism and unemployment will destroy it.

RedRum, you are imposing a capitalism framework on a population whose entire evolution has been premised on subsistence.

The hard truth is there has to be subsistence or a reservation no longer existing. This area of rural S.D. will never have the industry to support a population of 40,000. For a tribe member, do you allow the tribe to scatter and integrate into society or do you keep it together at any cost. The latter is what is usually chosen and rampant alcoholism and unemployment are the outcomes.

I know the area well as my father taught at Pine Ridge and a sister taught at Loneman. Teachers were paid well, but there was little emphasis on education as attendance wasn't really mandatory. Why worry about an education when you weren't going to leave and there was nothing there to use it on. There can be animosity to those who do get out and succeed. I knew of someone who became a doctor, came back, and was murdered.

It's sad that we have 3rd world conditions right in the middle of the country, but the solution from outsiders is always so simplistic. You have to be a moron to believe you can visit for a day or two and go back and write a report with all the solutions. And are you helping or hurting when you feed the false hope of getting the Black Hills back allowing the tribe to go back to the way it was. If you really want to help, offer solutions that help move forward.

Well said, RedRum. I remember growing up in Scottsbluff, not far from the Pine Ridge reservation, and the situation then (30 years ago) isn't much different at all than it is today. There's no easy solution, that's for sure, and those who think there's a magic bullet (like the UN wonk) are simply naive and misguided. Personally, I think your point about the solution involving letting the tribe scatter and integrate into society is really the only solution. Making it happen, that's another story.

I don't think you understood what I meant by subsistence. The Native American people survived on hunting and gathering and, sometimes, trading -- but never accruing anything that was unnecessary or beyond their means. Capitalism is premised on the accumulation of wealth -- something that Native Americans were culturally not predisposed to. Your application of capitalist metrics to their culture is forced and, as we have seem, dubious in implementation.

I took it that you meant basics provided to them. Instead of hunting and gathering, the basics are provided by the government.

Plenty of tribes now follow capitalism and are successful. Plenty of individual Indians do the same.
