What Mitt said is that he would prefer to have the cooperation of allies like Pakistan rather than operating unilaterally. That is an admirable principle, but I am guessing that Romney would have kept the OBL operation a secret from Pakistan too given their penchant for leaking like a sieve when we did inform them ahead of time. In any event, Politifact rated Obama's ad on Romney's position as "half true" which I think is generous.

Agree 100%. If people want a legitimate basis to criticize the president on OBL, they should focus on his disingenuous efforts to imply that Romney would not have made the same call by focusing on one statement about not "spending billions" on chasing OBL while conveniently ignoring dozens of other statements by Romney in 2008 about the importance of getting OBL brought to justice. They could get far more traction with that than with their silly efforts to manufacture an argument that Obama doesn't deserve credit for approving the operation.

That is not my understanding. Rather, they found OBL's suspected whereabouts in October, 2010, but wanted absolute confirmation, as well as time to fully plan the operation. They probably would only get one bite of the apple and needed to make sure it was successful.

They never knew that OBL was there with any certainty. Had they invaded the compound and OBL not been there, or had the mission been a failure with a couple dozen dead Navy SEALs, or had there been open combat between those SEALs and Pakistan, it would have been even more politically disasterous. He did have a choice, it was a difficult choise fraught with risk either way, and he did make the right call.

In any event, you are quoting some ex-Navy SEAL as saying that the president ddn't really make the call, but that the people who know the "truth" can't talk about it. That is nonsense.

I'm pretty sure "they" (the Obama Administration) authorized the attack on the bin Laden compound. I'm also pretty sure "they" did not authorize the Hookergate (though like most of the rest of us, "they" probably deep down wish they had been there, based upon the body of the one hooker whose face was not shown. Hubba hubba.)

Yes, read the New Yorker story or, for that matter, any of the press coverage relating to the mission. They believed that OBL was there, but they didn't know it. In other words, the intelligence was not yet actionable until several months later.

This is his only success in 3-1/2 years that anybody especially the media really cares abou it has to be held onto through November. Everything else he has done has two sides to the result. OBL is a topic that basically everyone in the country is in agreement on "glad he's gone". Other major things he has done that has been in the mainstream media: Saving the country from financial disaster, well there is a large population that thinks he may have made it worse or didn't do enough or stunted growth, etc. Obamacare hasn't happened yet. If we go down the list of major line items he wanted to accomplish while he was in office this may be the only one he can put a check mark next to.

Pretty sure that your original link was to some partisan blog that aggregates every piece of negative news or conjecture on Obama it can find. And in reading the Daily Mail piece, Obama's harshest critics come across as grinding a political ax more than making any legitimate criticisms of Obama's involvement in the operation. Of course Obama gave the go ahead, which then trickled down through any number of Generals, Colonels, Majors, etc. There are plenty of witnesses to confirm the fact that the President gave the order, and if the President did not in fact give the order, if some General brushed him aside and commanded the mission to go forward without the President's order, that raises some fairly frightening questions about the power of our military. But again, it all reads like bunk anyway so I'm not too concerned on that front.
