    Cyberbullying in Ind.

There are some 14 year old girls targetting other students that were talking about killing them and how to do it, with what, etc. The school they went to took action by expelling them based on the contents of their personal off school property conversations. The ACLU is now involved in this by filing a lawsuit on behalf of the girls against the school citing things like the instance shouldn't have been taken so seriously as they used emoticons and acronyms in caps, etc.

I think the school was in the right as the posts were targetting other classmates in the school and have an obligation to protect them. What say you on this?

Expulsion is too much IMO. But this is worthy of serious punishment, emoticons or no.

Everyone needs to realize that posting something on Facebook isn't conversation. It's publication. Think twice before you write something. That's a good idea even for anonymous message board posters, let alone Facebook where you're putting your good name behind it.

I would decide if expulsion is enough based on the text in the posts, the article only touches on what is in them and I really can't tell from that if the expulsion is warranted.

I understand what they're getting at, but if "I was only kidding!" doesn't work when the law comes after you for prank calling in a bomb threat, then neither should "but I put a smiley after it!" either.

In all seriousness though, I don't think ALL facebook threats should be taken seriously, but if the administrators felt the need, then so be it. I'd like to tell you all about my friend's mom, Mrs. Kaspar. She was a great teacher, worked her way up through the ranks, became an administrator and eventually Vice Principal at Millard South. She suspended a kid in 2011 for driving his car on the football field during the 2010/2011 Christmas Break. He went and posted some ominous things on facebook, which people saw. Then he went to the school with a gun. Mrs. Kaspar never got to go home from work that day, and Principal Curtis Case was also shot, though he survived.

Story about the Millard South shootings:

If these girls in Indiana were expelled based on their posts alone, I would probably lean toward the school overreacting. However, I'd bet that these young ladies had other problems that we won't ever hear about.

Unless they did this AT SCHOOL, then the school should have stayed out of it.

The parents of the children involved should have become involved with each other regarding the incident. If the offending children's parents wanted no part of responsability, then bring in the authorities to ascertain the seriousness of the situation.

Once again, the school should have nothing to do with it unless these acts were indicated to be planned to take place at the school or they used school computers to post them.

Personally, I think this would have been a great opportunity for some roadside cleanup to occur by the post happy girls.

I can't agree with this as some of the threatened girls were students at the school and they have an obligation to protect them at the school.

Your right Squatch, they should not have been suspended, they should have been arrested.
