even ex-TSA chief says system is broken
http://overheadbin.msnbc.msn.com/_ne...is-broken?lite
As head of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) from 2005 to 2009, Kip Hawley was the public face of an agency despised by millions of Americans. Today, he says that hatred is understandable because the agency’s approach to airport security is “broken,” arguing that it should forgo standardized procedures and a focus on prohibited items in favor of increased flexibility and mitigating risk.

The search for the family was called off and the area was reopened at 2:50 p.m.

I like how they shut down the entire terminal and still didn't find the family... way to justify that $8 billion we spend on the TSA!
But hey, at least they were all over this 7-year old girl with cerebral palsy to the point of causing her and her family to miss their flight.

I'd say that changes may be needed, but once we become lax, it's only a matter of time until we regret it.
If you don't think there are psychotic terrorists out there who wouldn't hesitate to use an infant, or an elderly man/woman, or a small child to achieve their dreams of destruction, then we're screwed.

the thing is, it's almost impossible to GET INTO the COCKPIT these days. From the double-barricaded/fortified door to the line of defense from passengers and all, it's just basically impossible to get into the cockpit anymore. And that's no thanks to TSA.

Airline security is drastically improved, no doubt. And I'm not apologizing or excusing some crappy behavior from TSA agents. I just don't like the idea of throwing out the baby with the bath water and lowering our guard. The fanatics have no problem waiting for the right opportunity to present itself. As poopy as they are, the TSA is at least some type of blocking force to carrying on dangerous items.

that's part of the problem, they're focusing on the wrong things. need to get out of that mindset and focus on other issues not these things.

They need to leave it up to airports/airlines. Not only would that make it Constitutional, but would quit sinking money into quicksand. The next person TSA catches would be the first.
As H57 said, this pony is dead. Terrorists can no longer hijack planes and turn them into missiles with the policy currently in place (cockpit barred, all banned from entering). The current system has created bottlenecks of people that are now vulnerable to suicide bombers, attacks, etc. as there is nothing to stop an attack there.
TSA doesn't give a rip if they destroy your belongings, insult you and/or your employer (I've had both of those happen), or give you a terrible experience traveling. Airlines/airports have something on the line....bad or unsafe experience and you won't travel again. They would make it safe, respectful and efficient for fear of losing the bottom line.
This doesn't include TSA now being expanded: "TSA teams are increasingly conducting searches and screenings at train stations, subways, ferry terminals and other mass transit locations around the country." I used to roll my eyes at statements inferring that the government is trying to turn the US into a police state. It's tough to laugh at such talk with this kind of expansion going on and of course, neither party is interested in changing that but fortunately the American public has gotten more vocal in their displeasure with TSA.

Rand Paul Launches Campaign to End the TSA
Senator Rand Paul has issued a press release in which he vows to lead the charge to “end the TSA” and put a stop to the needless and humiliating groping of toddlers and grandmothers.
Earlier this year, Paul was detained by the TSA after refusing to submit to an invasive pat down after already having passed through a body scanner. The incident prompted national headlines and caused the Senator to miss his flight.
The legislation would forcibly privatize the TSA and kick government out of airport security entirely. A recently passed bill actually allows airports to replace TSA screeners with private security but they have to go through a complex TSA permission process to do so, meaning only a handful of small airports have applied to evict the TSA.
