Thumbs up Banderas' week keeps getting better at Fremont Invite

These tweets on Josh say it all....we are getting a real good one in Josh Banderas...

Steven M. Sipple@HuskerExtraSip#Huskers recruit Josh Banderas unleashes 160-foot throw in discus. But get this: His best event is high hurdles ... http://tinyurl.com/7hwyj4a

@HuskerExtraSip You have to go back to names like Scott Frost to find another athlete that has this combination of power, speed & explosion.

The day after committing to Nebraska to play football, Lincoln Southwest junior Josh Banderas added another milestone to his wild week.

At the Fremont Track Invitational on Friday, Banderas shattered his personal-best mark of 126 feet in the discus when he won the event with a throw of 160 feet.
    "It's a surprise," Banderas said. "I'm really excited. I didn't expect 160."

Banderas, who considers the hurdles his best event, throws shot put in addition to the discus. After warming up and running the 110-meter hurdle prelims, Banderas said he felt good going into the discus. He was loosened up, and he could just let it rip.
Along with winning the discus, Banderas won the 110 hurdles in 14.95 seconds and was third in the shot put with a toss of 49-6.

Wow. In my day I threw the disc about 140', and could tickle 49' in the shotput. But I'd have had a real hard time running a sub 15 second 110 meter dash without hurdles! I think with the hurdles I'd have turned in a bloody-faced DNF

Not a bad throw, but quite a ways to go to catch the kid here in Mobridge with the #1 throw in the Nation = 194 feet in the discus... and he's only a junior - also he backed it up this weekend with a throw of 190 into about a 15 mph wind on Saturday which I was able to watch.

"The last 11 days we focused on Nebraska," said Snyder, "and now I know more about them than I want to."

I'm thrilled we are getting Banderas. But these track results are pretty average. Larry Station (a fellow LB) threw the discus 202 feet in high school. Banderas' time in the 110 HH is not even close to cracking the all-time list. And 49-6 in the shot put is pretty weak....Larry Station threw 64-9 and Scott Frost threw 61 feet.

I'm just putting it into perspective. There are lots of reasons to be happy Banderas will be playing FB for NU. But his track results at this point are not really one of them.

He's still only halfway though his junior track season, if he threw 49-6 he can get into the 50's. By his senior season he may be sniffing the low 60's. The fact that he took home gold medals in a throwing and a hurdle event at one meet is pretty special, even if the competition wasn't up to your "all-time" level.

Not to thread jack, but Marty Kobza was no slouch in track as well. First to 200' in Nebraska history in discus and 66" 11.5" in the shot.
