Some very good ideas that I plan on borrowing for next year.
In addition to the top 3 race finishes, we did two Concours awards for best looking car, one the girls' choice for the car they liked best, and then after that was selected one for the judges' choice. We did that after the race so we could give the awards to girls whose cars didn't win and spread things out a bit. I will borrow some additional ones like most original, etc.
I planned to do the Sportsmanship one too but forgot about it when I ran the event. Will definitely do it next year.
In addition to the Scouts regular races, we used to have a 'Open' division and an 'Outlaw' division; both were open to anyone (girls, adults, ex-scouts, anyone off the street) only difference was the 'Open' division was subject to the exact same rules as the Scouts; the Outlaw division has fewer restrictions. We've since changed 'Open' to 'Sibling' (open only to siblings; mostly did this for the girls), and added a 'Legends' division, where anyone can race a car from previous years and see if it can still stand the test of time.
Some of the Outlaw cars are cool; extra weight, extended length, razor-thin wheels, spring-loaded bumper,...I tell people we would probably even allow a swing-arm to knock other cars off the track. One guy once rigged up a bumper-switched battery-powered fan on the back of his car; he knew he would be disqualified (we still require gravity-driven only), but it was cool to watch it zip down the track 5x faster than the other cars!

I don't know RDR... that sounds like a lot of ribbons and opportunities for kids to feel good about themselves. Are you fostering socialism and wussification of the U.S. of A. with this stuff?

One of the girls was *****ed off that she got a trophy for best looking car and not one of the race trophies. I was proud of her.

Unfortunately, I believe we are doing just that --but it keeps the whiny parents off my back.
We had a campout a couple of years ago, and a couple of days before it the forecast called for scattered showers. Several parents wanted to cancel the campout due to potential rain, mud, mess, etc. I sent out an email basically calling everyone wimps (I actually did it in a very funny way...or so I thought...) Those who knew me told me the email was hilarious and spot-on. Those who didn't know me very well or were not able to see the 'point' I was making were offended. My response for them? I later sent out a 'manifesto' explaining my beliefs and reasonings regarding Scouting and camping/outdoors. I thought it would also be funny since the word 'manifesto' has some negative associations in the public psyche... it did not go over well...

We had 3 boys in scouts and I think it was the last year one of the cars was cut wrong. Picked it up and I got an idea and finally made my own. I think it turned out pretty good. I can't remember how it did in the parent division, but I was proud of what I did with my own hands.

Very nice, I love the creativity on so many of the cars like this one. We had a kit kat bar car that one of the girls and dad did - they found a jumbo-size bar and used the wrapper. Made everyone hungry
This is my 8 year-old son's car from this spring...he called it the Burkhead Express. Designed, cut, and painted entirely by him. I have hardly any tools and am not very good at this kind of thing, so a friend of ours gave us some guidance and let us use his band saw. Won 2nd place in his pack and 5th out of all the Wolf scouts at the Lincoln district race. Proudest thing for me was that this was his work, not mine.

Did you yell, "Rex Burkhead!" when it went zooming down the track?

Totally should've.
