Americans need to quit whining!!!

Fuel is a drug the U.S. has long since needed weaning off. Admittedly Americans have to cover greater distances than Europeans. But you don't need a glorified double bed powered by a throbbing great V8 to do that. A sensibly-sized car with a two-liter turbo will do the job just as comfortably. And with developing nations such as China, Brazil and India demanding ever more fuel, the planet can't put up with anyone's penchant for gas-guzzling monsters any more. But if the European experience is anything to go by, the $4 gallon isn't going to alter driving habits dramatically. America needs petrol prices to double if people are to permanently park up their 15mpg pick-up trucks. Maybe then it'll elicit a bit of sympathy from over here.

Comparing fuel prices between the two can't be done. The difference in regulations and mpg per car is dramatically different between the country's.

Men of Israel, consider carefully what you intend to do to these men. Some time ago Theudas appeared, claiming to be somebody, and about four hundred men rallied to him. He was killed, all his followers were dispersed, and it all came to nothing. After him, Judas the Galilean appeared in the days of the census and led a band of people in revolt. He too was killed, and all his followers were scattered. Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.” - Gamalie the Pharisee - Addressing the Sanhedrin regarding the new group called Christians

The big difference... the US is far behind the rest of the developed world in mass transit. Europeans, in general, don't have to rely on automobiles to get them where they want/need to go as do Americans -- and thus, a much larger percentage in Europe don't own their own vehicles and/or use much less fuel.

I wouldn't say the US is behind in mass transit. I contend we as a people, especially those of us in fly-over country, can't be relegated into riding in a collective box. Around these parts, that is saved for pigs and cows. Hell, for all practical purposes, those could be considered dining cars, if you don't mind rare meat. Not to mention, we like our autonomous-mobiles.

If you have a 2 liter turbo that can pull my 4000 pound camper I am all for it. I know I don't need a camper but I have always camped and that is how we spend our vacations. My boys love it. No tv, no cell phone, the way life was meant to be.

Would be much less expensive and much more practical for you to rent a truck when you wanted to tow your camper.

The question I have is, why can't a truck, let's use my 2009 Chevy avalanche as an example, run off a V-6 turbo charged engine? I'd get just as much horse power and way more mpg.
My brother in law have this discussion all the time...how can we improve so much medically, scientifically, etc since 1970 but engines aren't much better since then?
