Becks Offense
This thread is in no means an attempt to put down T-mart as I like the kid and he plays hard, however with Becks new offense I'm real excited to see Tommy Armstrong running the show as he is a gifted athlete and I believe will be a better fit for the offense going forward. I really like the direction of the offense as it looks like a bit of old school Huskers with a fusion of up tempo Kansas (Orange bowl team). Get the right man to pull the trigger and this offense can be terrific IMHO.

If he's a quarterback, he's a better fit than Martinez.

its the players, more than the scheme. our offense this last fall would have been considerably better had we been able to do the following things: hold on to the ball, catch the ball, occasionally hit the reciever in stride, rather than make the reciever stop or turn around to catch it, avoid 2 more penalties per game.
those items alone would have added significantly to our yardage, points, time of poss. 3rd down conv...... we have an experienced qb now, who has taken 1500+ snaps, he wont be rattled. we just have to sharpen his accuracy and motion/delivery. that alone will give us 5-6 more completions per game, which is about 50-60 yards of offense. cut down the fumbles and penalties, and that cuts out at least 4 of the losses over the last 2 years.
Im no talkin about zero penalties or turnovers, just a equal or less than our opponent, over a whole season.

of course our offense needs some help from the defense so......
get our defense back to top 20-25 stats will cut out about 50 yards per game, which is about 4 first downs, which is about 6 points, which takes our average def ppg from 23 down to 16-17 ppg----------- that gives the offense about 10 more snaps per game...... you see where this is headed

If we have an outstanding offensive line, the type of offense doesn't matter. Option, west coast, single wing, pro style, wishbone or spread.

Won't get rattled, heh? You didn't watch them play much last year. He ducks when he's pressured. Forgets to throw the ball away when the play is not there and opts for a sack/dangerous throw. Doesn't lower the shoulder but stands and gets pounded. I doubt his throwing motion or accuracy is going to change. The lob and wait-for-the-deep-ball play will be in full effect until someone beats him out. I think we have a Mike Grant and a Frazier-esque type situation at the QB spot, but I'm not sure Pellini would pull Martinez. 2 more years of him doesn't appeal to me.
I look forward to seeing Armstrong chuck the ball deep. NU had players so wide open the last few years...now a QB who can get it there. Wow. I also love the bruiser back (Cross), they added to the team. Nothing like on 3rd and 1, then a bowling ball to come steaming through the defensive line to move the chains.

Nothing quite like a backup quarterback to get the fans chanting.

...even when the "backup" is an 18 year old who hasn't even stepped on campus yet, let alone take a snap...lol...

When Grant was skip passing the ball on the turf, everyone knew there needed to be a change. Frazier wasn't a Manning or a Brees, but was an absolute improvement in the throwing department. Watch Armstrong throw in his videos and tell me that it wouldn't be an improvement over the wounded ducks that we've seen lately. He has pocket awareness, too.
Not sure what Carnes has because he could seemingly never get on the field. I just hope someone beats the incumbent out.

I think Fyfe will lead us to championships.
The backup everyone hails rarely ever makes an impact, save for Brook

And what about Turner Gill? In case you didn't know he was 3rd string doing nothing until TO put him in to pull out a win against Auburn. The rest is history. Back-up making an impact?

Nice one!

He's going to have to walk on water to beat out Tmart. And TMart will have to help him out be struggling early.
But if a freshman walks in, beats out a junior with 1500 snaps under his belt, that can't be bad for the program. It means we have a great one. But odds are T-Arm will have to wait his turn. Very possible he will be right in the race for #2.

Actually, he was third string and everyone was asking... Why?
Word was that he had a tendency to blow a play and then make a spectacular one... TO tended to distrust talent over training back then... After going 2 and 2... TO put Gill on the field... and the rest was history... the real question was: "Why was Gill third string?"
