So, Nebraska's 4-0 for the first time since 2011 and put on a spectacle Saturday night that has not been at Memorial Stadium for some time. Onward 12-0 and Indianapolis and then Dallas? Let's hold off on that for a second and look at what went right first.

Ameer Abdullah vs Miami 2014, Dennis Hubbard photo

Where would this Nebraska football team be without Ameer Abdullah? The answer is likely sitting at 2-2. On his best day as a Husker, and in front of a Memorial Stadium record crowd of 91,585, Abdullah broke 1972 Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Rodgers' school career record for all-purpose yardage. Abdullah's 313 all-purpose yards versus Miami were the second-most in a game for Nebraska, and it raised his career total to 5,762 and counting. Nebraska extended its NCAA-record consecutive sellout streak to an astonishing 336 games on Saturday, and the home crowd didn't disappoint.

A rivalry was reborn Saturday night. With most of the national championship team of 1994 and a record crowd on hand, Nebraska and Miami reprised the Smashmouth vs. Trashmouth matchup that gave Tom Osborne his first national championship. By game's end, Ameer Abdullah stood tall and a new generation of Nebraska fans had reasons to disrespect the Miami football program.

They also found reasons to be optimistic about the 2014 season, ...

As if physicality wasn't bad enough, Saturday night's TV colorman described the potent Husker offense as having "explosivity." Maybe I missed something, but the last time I checked, the word explosiveness was still in the dictionary.

Oh yes, and what about the repeated references to MAC-neeze State (last week's Husker opponent)? It's Mic-NEESE State. I know, picky, picky.

    A DRY HEAT?
I won't devote much time to last Saturday's "Sauna Bowl" at Fresno State. With a kickoff temps flirting with 100 degrees, it's a wonder there were any players who were able to actually finish

Of course Nebraska and Miami are just as different as they are similar, but the similarities fit the narrative I can most closely keep on the rails so we’ll head down that track.

Of the ten times NU and UM have played, only twice were the teams not similarly ranked or unranked; this will be the third, with NU clinging to a spot in the polls and Miami still paying for a first game loss to Louisville.

    Arguably each team’s greatest, ...

On one of those hot summer nights where it feels good to rest your arm on the car door and feel the air rush in through the open window, Nebraska kept its cool in the heat of California throughout a three-hour, 41-minute game.

Fresno State wouldn't stop trying to pass, so the Cornhuskers made road kill out of the Bulldogs with a notable assist from loud-and-proud freshman De'Mornay Pierson-El, who burned rubber on his first ...

So, Husker Nation tuned-in expecting to watch NU beat FCS school McNeese State and that’s exactly what happened, but the “W” was maybe the only expected thing that they got. Pretty much everything else in-between kick-off and Ameer Abdullah (brilliantly) deciding to take his ball and go home, was likely a surprise to most folks.

The silver-lining crowd will say ...

It didn't take long for Husker-late-game drama to return. In fact, it came back one game too soon. In spite of a game full of wallowing and mistakes (though surprisingly, only one turnover), Nebraska once again pulled brilliance out of a hole in the ground when the game was on the line. But due to the gap between the Huskers and McNeese State, there's still a lot to be disappointed in.

Now, that's a headline I'll probably never get to write again. As I watched the Cornhuskers dismantle the Owls of Boca Raton in Lincoln on Saturday, it struck me that the Husker offense was playing as if it were trying to prove a point.

I think it did more than that.

    ON FIRE?
The Husker "O" played most of the game with their hair on fire and the result was a new modern era B1G total offense record of 784 yards. Had it not been for a couple of miscues, NU could have easily racked up 900 yards on the hapless Owls. It didn't help the Hooters' cause when they lost their starting QB, Jacquez Johnson, in the first half. NU did not get FAU's best shot. But even if they had, the result wouldn't have been much different
