I examined four statistical categories: Punt Return Defense. Kick Return Defense. Turnover Margin. Penalty Yards Per Game.

These are the sneaky stats that can make the effort from the offense or defense appear better or worse. They can give your team an advantage. Or they can make things more difficult than they should be. Field position. Turnovers. Penalties. Excel in those categories, and you can make a good team great.
These are the sneaky stats that can make the effort from the offense or defense appear better or worse. They can give your team an advantage. Or they can make things more difficult than they should be. Field position. Turnovers. Penalties. Excel in those categories, and you can make a good team great. Struggle, and your team will likely not reach its potential.

Here's the results, 2000-2012 seasons (prior to 2000 was not available on NCAA.com)...

Punt Return Yardage Defense. Year/Yards Allowed Per Punt Return/National Rank

Kick Return Yardage Defense. Year/Yards Allowed Per Kickoff Return/National Rank

Turnover Margin. Year/Turnover Margin (Turnovers Gained minus Turnovers Lost)/National Rank

Penalty Yardage. Year/Penalty Yardage Per Game/National Rank

And here's the numbers, by head coach (though Solich is limited to 2000-04).

Average Punt Return Defense...
Pelini: 10.9 yards. 91st national rank.
Callahan: 6.3 yards. 24th national rank.
Solich: 10.3 yards. 62nd national rank.

Average Kick Return Defense...
Pelini: 22.3 yards. 73rd national rank.
Callahan: 20.6 yards. 53rd national rank.
Solich: 19.8 yards. 53rd national rank.

Average Turnover Margin...
Pelini: -0.3 turnovers. 75th national rank.
Callahan: -0.7 turnovers. 89th national rank.
Solich: +0.5 turnovers. 45th national rank.

Average Penalty Yardage Per Game...
Pelini: 62.0 yards. 96th national rank.
Callahan: 50.4 yards. 47th national rank.
Solich: 55.8 yards. 47th national rank.

Here's the average national rank of all four categories combined, by year:

And if you wish to combine all years, by coach... Average National Rank of the Four Categories ...

Pelini: 84
Callahan: 53
Solich: 52

A lot could be derived from this. More numbers could be crunched. But what I get from it is pretty simple. Pelini-coached teams are hurting themselves with a combination of allowing the opposition solid field position, allowing the other team to take away the ball more than the Huskers gain, and putting the team into larger holes with too many penalties. These are the little things that really aren't so little. This is what is hampering Pelini's teams from being as good as they could be. Special teams. Mental mistakes. They make a defense look worse than they are. They make an offense less effective than it could be. All but one season (2009) saw Pelini's teams rank lower in these categories combined than all of the Callahan (ugh) and Solich seasons. You wish know what I think needs fixing more than anything else? It's all in this analysis.

With the recent transfer it looks like there may even be some competition in the kicking game.
It would be great to develop this kind of depth on the defensive side of the ball. Seems like the secondary is the only position where there may be any kind of depth.

#10 Notre Dame @ #2 Nebraska. Week 7 of the 2013 college football season.
After a back and forth game, NU pulls out a W, 56-39. More importantly: three of the nation's best recruits for the 2014 class were in Lincoln for the game. Their names? Rave Dimington, Eric Slouch, and Nbongmkong Suhn. After the victory, they're all a lock.

This is the kind of fantasy world I live in during the offseason. Jealous? Start playing "NCAA Football 13" on PS3 or Xbox 360 and you'll know what I mean. Not a gamer? Don't care. Get into video games to play this video game. You are Bo, bro. Actually, you're kinda Mark Emmert... Recruiting, scheduling, conference re-alignments, it's all there. It's basically Dungeons and Dragons for Nebraska nerds. Pick it up. Or wait until next month when '14 comes out. B1G QB Denard Robinson graces the cover this year.

You're welcome.
As the owner, Henderson was in charge of day-to-day operations, planning trips, dealing with athletes and parents, and coordinating schedules all while making sure the gym ran smoothly and efficiently.

As Pelini listened, he realized he needed somebody with that exact skill set to help him with on-campus recruiting. So he turned to Henderson and asked whether she would be interested in working with the football program as the director of football operations.
