This event is the brainchild of Gary McGirr who also serves as the President of the NE Kansas Alumni Chapter. Gary along with Dan McGlynn, Husker Dan of Husker Dan's Army, Kenlon Johannes and several other volunteers who serve on board of this non-profit organization have grown this event into what is has become today and they are to be commended for their year-round efforts without pay to show our respect for our military brethren.
For those not familiar with Husker Salute, it is a weekend for the troops that includes lodging at the Cornhusker Marriott thanks to the generosity of former Husker David Fiala of Futures One with a tour of Memorial Stadium that includes a tunnel walk entrance onto Tom Osborne Field. After the stadium tour they had the opportunity to buy half-price Husker stuff at the Nebraska Bookstore. The game watch party of the victory over Purdue was held at the large ballroom at the Cornhusker Marriott with the halftime meal served by Skeeter Barnes. On Sunday the full honor guard prayer breakfast was hosted by Gary Sharpe with invocation by Ron Brown and keynote address by Tom Osborne.
I have attended three of the six Salutes and each time it has grown in scope and it is priceless to see memories being created as military familes attend with children and grandchildren. This year three generations of the Sauser family attended with the grandson named after Tom Osborne. When Coach walked into the room young Lincoln Thomas Sauser walked up to Coach and informed him of two things, that he was named after him and that Coach was famous. Coach graciously accepted the compliment and took time for this photograph.
