Seniors Esther Ramacieri (left) and Allie Havers (right) lead Nebraska against Southwest Baptist Sunday at Pinnacle Bank Arena

The Nebraska women’s basketball team opens play for the 2016-17 season when the Huskers take on Southwest Baptist in exhibition action at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Sunday. Tip-off between the Big Red and the Bearcats is set for 2 p.m., with tickets available now at Huskers.com.

Free live audio of Sunday’s exhibition game will be available on Huskers.com and through the Huskers App and the TuneIn App. The game will be carried live on radio by the Husker Sports Network. No live video stream is available for this game.

Nebraska’s exhibition game with the Bearcats will mark the first appearance on the Husker sideline for Coach Amy Williams (nee Gusso, Husker player 1996-98). Williams and her entire 2015-16 USD staff (Tom Goehle, Chuck Love, Tandem Mays, Amanda Hart) will make their Husker debuts against Southwest Baptist, many familiar faces return to the court to power Nebraska.

Sounds like the Huskers are coming together listening to the first half (at least listening to the announcers). Huskers with an 11 pt lead at the half, 40-29. Pretty even up to about the middle of the 2nd qtr then the Husker ladies started to pull away a little. Looks like we are getting some real good newcomers. :) Rylie Cascio-Jensen with a nice trey (6pts, 2res, 1 assist); several nice plays from Nicea Eliely (4pts, 2 rbs); & Darrien Washington (2pts, 2rbs). Allie Havers led off, making the first score (6pts in the half), Jess with 19 pts, and Jasmine with 2 pts and Maddie with 1pt.

So Baptist getting into some foul trouble 12-7 for Lady Huskers.

Announcers sound encouraged! (and with the team play)

Not so good 3Q. After leading by 17, So Baptist cut lead Huskers lead to 5 (50-45) whose 3Q play was characterized by sloppy passing and turnovers leading to So Baptist points. Lady Huskers 3pt shooting 11.1% (1-9) vs 33.3% (4-12).

Lady Huskers win the Exhibition Game 73-71 in a squeaker finish (So. Baptist misses a game-winning trey as time expires).

So Baptist was killing us with the treys (7-18 vs our 3-13), & Points in Transition (19 turnovers vs their 12). Shooting from the field 45.2% vs our 42.1%. Fouls & Free-Throws saved it for us (22-34 vs their 8-12).

Jess with 30 pts - 13 rbs; Allie with 14 - 6, Rylie with 7 - 2.

Coach Amy, got lax in the 2nd half - way too many turnovers and easy points for them in transition. Good learning experience for the team.

Brace yourselves, folks. We are a long, long way from having a basketball team after the program was blown up. To put it in perspective, Southwest Baptist lost 3 times last year to UNK (Kearney, not Kentucky), the last time by 29 points! Hopefully the transfers will help immediately next year, and recruiting will pick up. Hard to believe we are only 4 years removed from a conference tournament title, 3 years removed from the sweet 16,and 2 years from having an NCAA tournament team. How quickly it all went south.

Not to mention the Brutal schedule facing us! In addition to the rugged Big Ten Conference, we play last year's WNIT Teams plus Wash St., Virginia, Virginia Tech, Cal, Creighton, and capping it all off, UCONN (perennial No 1 Team).

(My pre-season; I'm stocking up on Scotch!)

We've scheduled tough for years, so this isn't a new development. The schedule might be marginally more difficult than it has been, but that won't be a major factor, other than making for some huge blowouts. Any win will be a good one. Keep imbibing that scotch, Red Don, you're gonna need it.
