MLS plan for 28 teams by 2020? Is this a good thing?
Normally, I'd say absolutely not. But with the USA covering many more square miles than other leagues, are they looking to go more West/East separation to cut travel? Otherwise, I can't see many positives. Arena has already stated more teams will not necessarily mean more opportunities for American players.
There are 23 teams slated to be competing by 2018, 24 if you count Miami. So that would mean finding 4 more teams in the next 4 years. Considering how long it takes to get some of these expansion teams up and running, I think getting to 28 by 2020 is too optimistic. I can see 28 teams at some point with St. Louis is an obvious choice. Also, the Southwest is pretty much wide open for a team, whether that be Las Vegas or Phoenix. Granted, those two cities would probably require a domed stadium. Charlotte would be another good market for a team, and Indianapolis. That would get the league to 28 teams, and I don't see any of those new franchises impeding on a current franchise. Maybe the Southwest team steals some support from the Galaxy, and a St. Louis team takes some support from both SKC and Chicago, but those numbers wouldn't be very high.
